Duvet / Quilt Making Process | KKR Linens & Fabrics!

Making a duvet can be a rewarding and creative project. Here's a general guide on how to make a basic duvet cover:

Steps:

  1. Measure and Cut Fabric:

    • Measure your duvet insert to determine the size of the cover. Standard duvet sizes are twin, full, queen, and king.

    • Add seam allowances to the measurements. For example, if your duvet is 90 x 90 inches, you might add 1 inch to each side for seams, making your fabric pieces 92 x 92 inches.
    • Cut two identical pieces of fabric for the front and back of the duvet.

  2. Hemming:

    • On one of the fabric pieces, hem one of the shorter edges. Fold the fabric over twice and sew along the fold to create a neat hem. This will be the top opening of your duvet cover.

  3. Overlap or Closure Method:

    • Decide how you want your duvet cover to close. The most common methods are:
      • Button Closure: Sew buttons on one side and corresponding buttonholes on the other.
      • Snaps: Sew snaps on one side and corresponding snap receivers on the other.
      • Overlap Closure: Overlap the two hemmed edges by a few inches and sew along the sides, creating a pocket for the duvet.

  4. Sewing:

    • Place the two fabric pieces right sides together, aligning all edges.
    • Pin the sides and bottom edges together, leaving the top (hemmed) edge open.
    • Sew around the three pinned sides, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Reinforce the corners.

  5. Finishing Touches:

    • Trim excess fabric at the corners to reduce bulk.
    • Turn the duvet cover right side out through the top opening.
    • Use a blunt object, like a knitting needle, to gently push out the corners for a crisp finish.
    • Press the seams and edges with an iron to create a polished look.

  6. Closure (if using buttons or snaps):

    • Add buttons or snaps to the hemmed edge and corresponding buttonholes or snap receivers on the opposite side.
